The Dark Side of Working With 'No show' Models

Yes, today it happened again!

There is one occurrence that every photographer of models, especially amateur models recruited on the internet, deals with. Put a group of these model photographers together and there will soon be stories swapped about it.
  • Flaking.
  • Being stood up.
  • No shows.
  • Canceling.

This is when you set up a shoot with a model and then the model doesn't show up. I differentiate between a 'no show' and a 'cancellation'. If a model calls me and tells me she isn't coming before the shoot actually happens, that's a 'cancellation'. I still don't like it, but I can deal with it ( well, of course it depends on the reason of the cancellation ). The more lead time the better.

This happened to me today. A model had booked me for a portfolio shoot. I had the studio booked. Three hours before the shoot, the 21 year old model, Maria calls and tells me she's 'too tired' to shoot. It sucks, but at least I was saved the 30 minute drive down to the studio.

It is a running joke that you don't want to be related to a model because their grandmothers, aunts, and uncles die a lot. Or they end up in the hospital.

Is there something we can do about this? So is there a solution? Not really.
There is no indication you're going to get a flake. You do start to develop a 6th sense about it. They stop returning emails or calls before the shoot. But you normally can't be sure. You can lower your costs of a flake. I beforehand agree with the model that I will call them 1-2 hours before a shoot. It works to some extent, but you still have cancels.
The only solution really is to learn to deal with it. It's an occupational hazard and only happen rarely, well at least to me. Don't waste a lot of emotional energy on it when it does happen.

Well at least Ms. Maria who cancelled today gave me inspiration for a blog post. Thanks also to the studio (web page here) for his comprehension of the situation.

Dutch Dame about her fetish photoshoot with me.

What Dutch Dame wrote today on her Livejournal:

Today I have been sleeping the entire day, I think I am catching a sickness.... Oh well, maybe Mexican flu hehe joke joke. Even though I am tired and going to bed after this, I had to write a blog with my previous adventure.

I went to Antwerp (Belgium) to work with awesome photographer Andre Marchandise, his site: studiofotografie.metrix.be/

I was looking forward to it and Tuesday morning I arrived. We went to a studio and I recognised it immediatly. HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE, but what a make-over it had. First time I was there the toilet was outside. The studio's were messy. But now it looking beautiful! It looked entirely new I was astonished. Very good! I loved shooting that day in the studio, I brought some new costume designs I made.

When we were done shooting me, the photographer and his wife (very pretty, think she should do modeling too) went for dinner in a lovely small restaurant nearby Mechelen (nearby Antwerp), de Wijngaerd (that was the name if I remember correctly). The food was delicious! There was way to much on my plate then I could eat, but DELICIOUS!

After dinner André and me drove to the B&B, it was lovely! I can recommend it to every one in the neighborhood to go there for a night. The people running it, run it with much love for the business. This is their site: www.benbhierennu.be/

Next day André and me went shooting in the Fetish Cafe: www.fetish-cafe.com/ The people from the cafe were very nice. I enjoyed working there, and their dungeon is to die for! I definitely going there again with my master hehe. We did a set with candles, I won't mention to much. Don't want to spoil the suprise. Furthermore we shot with a prop from the movie SM rechter (Belgium movie, coming soon!). It was a medievil torture device. I loved that one, quit comfy. Want one of those at home hehe.

It was lovely and wonderful to shoot with Andre Marchandise. He was on my list of people I wanted to work with before I die (yes, I have a wishlist hehe). And it was totally worth shooting with. He is so relaxed to work with and so nice. Wednesday morning he showed me around Antwerp a bit and took me to the Cathedral. I was so thankfull, it was lovely. That Cathedral was really impressive (no candids...) Can't wait to show you all the pictures we made ^_^ I wish I took some candids, but off course I forgot my camera AGAIN.... snif... will I never learn *_*
